Editing Pittacus

'''Pittacus''' of Mytilene (Πιττακός, Pittakós; Pittacus; /ˈpɪtəkəs/) was a statesman, military leader, and one of the '''[[Seven Sages]]''', renowned for his wisdom and governance. He lived during the late 7th and early 6th centuries BCE on the island of Lesbos, in the city of '''Mytilene'''. He was born to a lineage said to be connected to the ancient '''Aeolian''' nobility, though details about his family are sparse. Pittacus rose to prominence through his military skills and leadership during Mytilene's conflicts with the neighboring island of '''Tenedos''' and the city of '''Athens'''. He helped the brothers of the poet '''Alcaeus''' overthrow the tyrant '''Melanchrus''' (~612 BCE); and then he gained fame for his role in the capture of '''Sigeion''', near the Hellespont, wresting it from Athenian control. According to reports, he defeated the Athenian commander '''Phrynon''' in single combat, securing the victory for his home island. Pittacus was chosen as '''aisymnētēs''' (ἄισυμνήτης; /ˌaɪsɪmˈnɛːtɛːs/), a sort of arbitrator or ruler appointed during times of political crisis, around 589-579 BCE. His tenure was noted for fair and moderate governance, including the introduction of laws aimed at reducing societal tensions, such as a law that imposed greater penalties for offenses committed in a state of drunkenness. Among his reforms was the establishment of a proportional system of justice, which aimed to temper the severity of punishments based on the circumstances of the crime, reflecting his philosophy of moderation.

Pittacus was celebrated for his wise sayings, contributing to his reputation as one of the Seven Sages; his emphasis on practical wisdom, moderation, and the importance of understanding one's circumstances left a lasting impact on Greek ethical and political thought. Pittacus is believed to have died around 568 BCE, after resigning from his position as aisymnētēs after ten years, and living the remainder of his life as a private citizen. Much of what is known about himcomes from later sources, including the works of '''Herodotus''', '''Diogenes Laërtius''', and other historians and philosophers. As with many figures from this period, the historical accuracy of accounts varies, with some details likely embellished or influenced by subsequent generations. In modern scholarship, Pittacus is often studied within the context of early Greek philosophy and governance, particularly for his contributions to the development of legal and ethical norms. His life and work exemplify the blend of practical governance, military leadership, and philosophical wisdom that characterized the Archaic period in Greece.

Pittacus is credited with several sayings that reflect his philosophical outlook and practical wisdom. While the attribution of specific sayings to historical figures from antiquity can sometimes be challenging due to the passage of time and the nature of oral traditions, the following sayings are among those commonly accepted by modern scholars as representative of Pittacus's thought:

* "Know thy opportunity" (Γνῶθι καιρόν, Gnōthi kairón): This saying emphasizes the importance of recognizing and seizing the right moment in life, a testament to Pittacus's belief in the value of timing and prudence.
* "Do not do to others what you would not want done to yourself": An early expression of the '''Golden Rule''', this maxim underscores the ethical principle of reciprocity and fairness in one's dealings with others.
* "Power reveals the man": Pittacus observed that a person's true character is revealed when they are in positions of power or authority, highlighting his interest in the virtues and vices that governance can bring to the fore.
* "The difficult is done at once; the impossible takes a little longer": This saying reflects a pragmatic and determined approach to problem-solving, acknowledging the challenges of achieving difficult goals while asserting the potential of perseverance.
* "It is hard to be good" (Χαλεπὰ τὰ καλά, Chalepà tà kalá): A reflection on the challenges of living a virtuous and ethical life, this maxim captures Pittacus's understanding of the complexities of human nature and morality.
