Book 24, the final chapter, concludes the epic with a powerful exploration of mercy, grief, and reconciliation. This book brings the narrative from the height of wrath and vengeance to a poignant resolution, focusing on the themes of humanity and compassion amidst the backdrop of war. The book opens with Achilles still deeply grieving for Patroclus; he drags Hector's body around Patroclus's tomb each day, unable to find peace. This act of desecration against Hector, though driven by profound sorrow, earns the disapproval of the gods, who decide it is time for Hector's body to be returned to Troy for a proper burial. The gods, moved by Priam's plight and Hector's dishonor, intervene. Thetis (Θέτις) is sent to Achilles, and Iris (Ἶρις) to Priam, instructing them towards reconciliation. Zeus (Ζεύς) himself orchestrates this act of compassion, demonstrating a divine respect for the rites of burial and the dignity of the dead. In a daring and humble act, Priam enters the Achaean camp under divine protection to plead for his son's body. Homer's epic concludes with the funeral of Hector and does not cover Achilles' death, which is most famously attributed to an arrow shot by Paris, which hits him in the heel (the only vulnerable part of his body). This event is prophesied but not described in the Iliad; the story of Achilles' heel originates from the myth that his mother, Thetis, dipped him in the river Styx to make him invulnerable, holding him by his heel and thus leaving that part of his body susceptible to injury. The actual account of Achilles' death is found in various sources of Greek mythology and later retellings, including the ''Aethiopis'', one of the poems of the <u>Epic Cycle</u>. == Inaccuracies and Anachronisms ==

The mention of iron (the iron-tipped spear given to '''Meriones''' by Achilles) is anachronistic for the Mycenaean period, which primarily used bronze for weaponry. Iron became prevalent only in the subsequent <u>Dark Ages</u> and early <u>Archaic</u> period. 

The political structures in the Iliad reflect a later period's city-state ('''polis''') organization rather than the palatial-centered bureaucracy of the Mycenaeans. The power of kings like Agamemnon and the assembly of warriors resemble more closely the later Greek practices than the Mycenaean kings' absolute rule. The communal feasts and assemblies in the Iliad mirror the '''symposium''' '''culture''' of later Greek society, distinct from the more formalized palace-controlled distribution of goods seen in Mycenaean [[Linear B]] tablets. 

The detailed cremations and funeral games for Patroclus are not consistent with Mycenaean practices, where inhumation in '''tholos''' or '''shaft graves''' was prevalent. The Mycenaeans also engaged in complex burial rituals, but the specific practices of cremation followed by athletic funeral games reflect a later period. 

Descriptions of vessels and other items in the Iliad do not always match the forms known from Mycenaean archaeology. For example, the drinking cups and other pottery described bear more resemblance to later Geometric and Archaic Greek ceramics. References to textile work in the Iliad lack the specificity of the Mycenaean palace-controlled textile industry, as evidenced by Linear B tablets detailing the production and distribution of textiles. 

The Iliad is composed in an alphabetic script derived from <u>Phoenician</u>, whereas Mycenaean Greeks used the Linear B script, a syllabic system for writing an early form of Greek, predominantly for administrative purposes. While some deities in the Iliad can be traced back to Mycenaean times (Zeus, Hera, Poseidon), the relationships, characteristics, and narratives associated with these gods reflect later developments in Greek mythology. Linear B texts mention deities like '''Potnia''', '''Enyalios''', and others not emphasized in Homer's work, suggesting shifts in religious focus and storytelling.
