'''Theseus''' (Θησεύς ὁ Ἀθηναῖος, Theseus ho Athēnaîos) is one of the most celebrated heroes in Greek mythology, with a life story that encapsulates the ideals of courage, intelligence, and justice. He was the son of '''Aethra''', daughter of King '''Pittheus''' of '''Troezen''', and '''Aegeus''', King of '''Athens''', though he was also considered the son of '''[[Poseidon]]''', with whom Aethra lay in the same night. Aegeus left a sword and sandals under a heavy rock, telling Aethra that if their son could lift the rock and retrieve the items, he should come to Athens to find his father.

Raised in Troezen (in <u>Argolis</u>), Theseus grew strong and brave. Upon reaching manhood, he lifted the rock and retrieved Aegeus' tokens. He chose the dangerous land route to Athens over the safer sea route, engaging in and defeating numerous brigands and monsters, including '''Periphetes''', '''Sinis''', the '''Crommyonian Sow''', '''Sciron''', '''Cercyon''', and '''Procrustes''', earning a reputation for both strength and justice.

Perhaps the most famous of Theseus's deeds was his journey to <u>Crete</u> to end the regular sacrifice of seven Athenian boys and seven girls to the '''Minotaur''', a monstrous half-man, half-bull. With the help of '''Ariadne''', King '''Minos'''' daughter, who gave him a ball of thread to navigate the <u>Labyrinth</u>, Theseus killed the Minotaur and led the other Athenians out.

Theseus took Ariadne with him as he left Crete, but he abandoned her on the island of '''Naxos''', an act that later versions of the myth explain with various motivations and divine interventions. Theseus forgot to change his ship's sails from black to white, leading his father Aegeus, who was watching for his return, to believe Theseus was dead and to throw himself into the sea, which was thereafter called the <u>Aegean</u>.

Theseus subsequently became king of Athens and worked to unify the region of <u>Attica</u> under Athenian leadership, establishing the city as a major power. He introduced political and military reforms and was credited with founding the <u>Isthmian Games</u>.

Theseus' involvement with the <u>Amazons</u>, either through abducting their queen, '''Antiope''', or encountering them during their invasion of Athens, led to a significant battle ('''Amazonomachy'''), reflecting themes of chaos and civilization.

Theseus' friendship with '''Pirithous''', king of the <u>Lapiths</u>, led to several adventures, including the attempt to abduct '''[[Persephone]]''' from the underworld, a venture that ended with Theseus being imprisoned until '''[[Hercules]]''' freed him. 

In later life, Theseus' popularity waned. He was eventually overthrown, exiled, or voluntarily left Athens. His death varies in accounts, with one version stating he was pushed off a cliff on the island of '''Skyros'''. 

Some myths suggest that Theseus's judgment faltered in his later years, including his involvement in the abduction of '''Helen''' and his marriage to '''Phaedra''', which led to tragic consequences for his family. These actions, among others, tarnished his reputation and questioned his wisdom and moral integrity.

Phaedra was another daughter of Minos, the sister of Ariadne. She became Theseus' second wife after he abandoned her sister, his first wife, on the island of Naxos. After marrying Theseus, Phaedra found herself deeply in love with her stepson, '''Hippolytus'''. Hippolytus, however, was a devotee of '''[[Artemis]]''', goddess of the hunt and chastity, and showed no interest in romantic or sexual relationships, particularly with his stepmother.

Ashamed and tormented by her forbidden love, Phaedra initially tried to conceal her feelings. However, her nurse and confidante discovered the secret and suggested revealing her love to Hippolytus, hoping it might lead to a reciprocal feeling. When Phaedra declared her love to Hippolytus, he was horrified and rejected her outright, adhering to his principles and loyalty to his father, Theseus. In some versions of the story, after being rejected Phaedra left a letter for Theseus claiming that Hippolytus had tried to seduce her or even raped her, and then she took her own life. In other versions, she kills herself without making the false accusation, but the accusation is made to Theseus by her nurse or discovered in a note after her death.

Believing Phaedra's false accusation, Theseus called upon '''[[Poseidon]]''' to punish Hippolytus. Poseidon sent a sea monster (or in some versions, scared Hippolytus' horses with a bull from the sea) while Hippolytus was driving his chariot along the shore, causing the horses to panic and the chariot to crash, leading to Hippolytus' death. Afterward, the truth about Phaedra's love and the falseness of her accusation came to light. Theseus was left to mourn the unjust death of his son and the tragic role his own actions played in the sequence of events.
