'''Bias''' of Priene (Βίας ὁ Πριηνεύς, Bías ho Priēneús; Bias; /ˈbaɪ.æs əv praɪˈniː/) was a '''pre-Socratic''' philosopher and one of the '''[[Seven Sages]]''', renowned for his wisdom and judiciousness. He lived during the 6th century BCE, with most estimates placing his floruit around 570-550 BCE. Bias hailed from '''Priene''' (modern-day Güllübahçe), a city in Ionia, near the coast of Asia Minor, which was a center of intellectual and cultural activity in the Archaic Greek world. Bias was celebrated for his contributions to law and governance in Priene; he was known not only for his legal acumen but also for his ethical standards, advocating for justice, moderation, and compassion in legal and political affairs. Like other sages, Bias is attributed with several maxims and sayings that reflect his philosophical and ethical views; one of the most famous is, ''"Most men are wicked,"'' suggesting a skeptical view of human nature but also emphasizing the importance of virtuous conduct and personal integrity. Bias was reputed to have played a significant advisory role to individuals and states alike, offering counsel that was esteemed for its wisdom and practicality. His advice often emphasized the welfare of the community and the virtues of peace over conflict. Bias is said to have died at a very advanced age while pleading a cause for his client. After he had finished speaking, he rested his head on his grandson. When the advocate on the opposite side had spoken, the judges decided in favor of Bias's client, by which time Bias had died.
