Cleobulus

Cleobulus of Lindos (Κλεόβουλος ὁ Λίνδιος, Kleóboulos ho Líndios; /kliːˈɒbjʊləs əv ˈlɪndɒs/) was one of the Seven Sages of Greece, a title bestowed upon seven early 6th century BCE philosophers, statesmen, and lawgivers who were renowned in the ancient world for their wisdom. Cleobulus was noted for his philosophical sayings, riddles, and the governance of the city-state of Lindos, on the island of Rhodes in the Aegean Sea. Cleobulus ruled as a tyrant; his leadership was remembered positively for bringing prosperity and stability to his city. He is credited with promoting cultural and civic projects, including the construction of public works and the encouragement of artistic expression. His reign exemplified the archaic Greek ideal of the benevolent ruler who guides with wisdom and foresight. Among his contributions to philosophy, Cleobulus is especially remembered for his maxims and riddles, which were aimed at promoting moderation, self-control, and the pursuit of harmony in life. His riddles and sayings were designed to stimulate thought and encourage ethical behavior, embodying the early Greek philosophical interest in morality and the best way to live.

Cleobulus' legacy is largely preserved through the accounts of later writers, including Diogenes Laërtius, who compiled the lives and sayings of the Seven Sages. His emphasis on moderation, harmony, and the moral education of the individual contributed to the early development of Greek ethical thought, predating the more systematic philosophical inquiries of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.
